FEATURING
David Bowles is a Mexican-American author and translator from south Texas, where he teaches at the University of Texas Río Grande Valley. He has written several award-winning titles, most notably The Smoking Mirror and They Call Me Güero. In 2019, he co-founded the hashtag and activist movement #DignidadLiteraria, which has negotiated greater Latinx representation in publishing.
Veronica Carbajal was born in El Paso, Texas and raised across the border in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua by my mom and my grandparents. After graduating from Burges High School, Verónica went on to receive her B.A. in Environmental Studies from Brown University and J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin Law School. Afterwards, Verónica moved back to El Paso where, for the last 15 years she has worked at the Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. Verónica has devoted her life to social justice issues, particularly, environmental justice, housing, historic and cultural preservation, and animal rights. She is also a children’s book author and small business owner, publishing on her imprint, Muneca Books. Her first book, Toma Toma Toma, is based on her mom’s childhood dog and part of the proceeds benefit local animal rescues.
Lawrence Welsh, a first-generation Irish American, was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. He received his MFA with honors in creative writing from the University of Texas at El Paso. Welsh has also published 12 books of poetry, including Begging for Vultures: New and Selected Poems, 1994-2009 (University of New Mexico Press). In 2018, the University of New Mexico Press published Cutting the Wire: Photographs and Poetry from the U.S.-Mexico Border, a collaboration with Ray Gonzalez and Bruce Berman. He provides a unique perspective on biculturalism and how to embrace two cultures through poetry.
